synthetic investigations in steriods
Abstract
he thesis entitled “Synthetic Investigations in Steroids” consists of two chapters and a short appendix. Each chapter has been divided into two sections.
Chapter I
Section A is a review of the chemistry of 19?nortestosterone and its analogues.
Section B describes the preparation of dl?17(??OH)?dihydroequilenin by a modification of the method of Johnson and Banerjee, high?pressure hydrogenation studies on dl?17(??OH)?dihydroequilenin, ??equilenin, and d?equilenin 17?ethylene ketal, and the conversion of dl?8?isooestradiol and d?8?isooestrone to dl? and d?8?iso?10?iso?19?nortestosterone (A) and their 5(10)?ethylenic isomers. The stereochemical assignment of 8?iso?10?iso?19?nortestosterone (A) has been supported by ORD data.
Chapter II
Section A reviews the isolation, structural elucidation, and biosynthesis of 3??hydroxyoestra?5(10),6,8?trien?17?one (B), a urinary steroid, and synthetic B?ring aromatic steroids.
Section B deals with the characterization of the two neutral products obtained in the high?pressure hydrogenation of equilenin derivatives and the utilization of these compounds for the synthesis of the urinary steroid (B) and its 3??epimer. The above two neutral products were tested for physiological activity.
Appendix
The appendix is concerned with the preparation of two steroidal derivatives with a view to studying their physiological properties.
