Studies on the chemistry of isomeric pyridine monocarboxylic acids, their amides and their chlorethanol and N-substitued amino-ethanol easters
Abstract
The thesis comprises five parts and a General Introduction, each part being treated under three heads, viz. (1) Special Introduction, (2) Experimental, and (3) Summary. The General Introduction deals with the importance of studying the chemistry of nicotinic acid, its isomers, and their derivatives in view of their therapeutic potentialities. It also briefly traces the historical development of the discovery of the various therapeutic actions exhibited by nicotinic acid and its derivatives such as coramine and procaine?like esters, thereby stimulating research on allied compounds.
The General Introduction, in addition, summarises the work of the author, viz. the preparation of the three pyridine monocarboxylic acids from appropriate available raw materials, the synthesis of their amides, their p?chloroethanol and N?substituted aminoethanol esters, and incidentally reviews the relevant literature regarding these types of compounds.
Part I is concerned with the preparation of nicotinic acid from various sources, mainly coal?tar, and describes the preparation of coramine (diethylamide) and some aryl?amides.
Part II deals with the preparation of the pyridine ??carboxylic acid, viz. picolinic acid, with special reference to its purification, and details the syntheses of six of its aryl?amides.
Part III is similar in scope to Part II, except that it deals with the preparation of the pyridine ??carboxylic acid, viz. isonicotinic acid, and the synthesis of some of its aryl?amides.
Part IV treats the synthesis of the p?chloroethyl esters of the three pyridine monocarboxylic acids and their reaction with 2?anisidine to yield the three p?anisidino?ethanol esters.
Part V describes the preparation of two amines (the text cuts off here in the original), together with improvements in technique in their preparation.
