    Abstract
This thesis describes the investigations carried out by the author in nuclear magnetic resonance, a subject which has shown a phenomenal expansion both in experimental techniques and in the range of applications in the last fifteen years since the discovery of the effect by Bloch and Purcell. The thesis has been divided into tiio parts. In Part I t^TO techniques developed by the author for increasing the strength of nuclear magnetic resonance signals and for decreasing the effect of radiation damping on resonance line shapes are discussed, as also a new alternative expression for the signal-tonoise ratio. Part II is devoted to structural investigations of hydrated crystals. The description of the proton magnetic resonance experimental studies of the structures of three crystals is follo:?od by a critical discussion of the nature of hydrogen bonds in hydrated crystals, on the basis of v;hich a bent hydrogen bond model is proposed for the structure of ice. In the last Chapter of Part II, a now method of structural investigation of hydrates by spinning crystals is proposed. There are t\-7o Appendices which describe the author's investigations on magnetic field stabilisers and phase-sensitive detectors, which arose from problems encountered in the develorjnant of the instrumentation for the r.f. spectrometer
