dc.description.abstractWhen a high velocity sutmerged water jet enters a quiescent amhient medium of the same fluid Its energy gets gradually dissipated along Its course In the surrounding medium and Its efflux velocity gets decelarated along the axis. This thesis deals with investigations of such a phenomenon undertaken with a single jet under different flow conditions. A comparison of such studies have been made with twin jets and the single jet kept under identical conditions when the efflux areas of “both the twin jets and the single jet are the same. The present studies report such investigations undertaken on single and twin interfering jets for different spacings “between the jets, different efflux velocities and different tailwater levels. It has been found within the range of the experiments that (a) the decelaration of the axial velocity is quicker and the energy dissipation is faster in the twin jets than Its single jet counter part under all conditions, (b) lesser the submergence more will be the energy dissipation for both the cases, (c) with closer spacings of the twin jets it was found that the throw will be more and with larger spacings the throw is less and (d) within the range of efflux velocities studied it was found that the efflux velocity did not have any effect upon either decelaration of the axial velocity or the energy dissipation characteristics. Such studies have their technical application in the design of stilling basins under hydraulic structures.
