The thesis consists of four chapters. In chapter I we have described the non-Newtonian fluids which we have discussed in the text and have also derived the equations of motion in the systems of coordinates which we have employed. Finally we have found out specific expressions for the invariants of the powers of a matrix of order three or four and have indicated a procedure for expressing the invariants of the powers of a symmetric tensor of order n. Each of the subsequent chapters is divided into a number of parts, each part dealing exclusively with one particular problem. Each part starts with a brief survey of the problem solved in the text and a short account of the contributions made by the author.
