dc.description.abstractThis thesis describes the work carried out by the author on single crystals of certain hydrated metal organic compounds, using the technique of wide-line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The principal aim of these investigations is to determine the length and orientation of the interproton vectors of the water molecules and to find out any hydrogen bonds that may be existing between the water oxygens and any other neighbouring oxygen. The classic Pake method has been used to determine the length and orientation of the interproton vectors and this data together with the available X-ray crystal structure are used to propose the possible hydrogen bonds, that may be present in the crystal. A wide line NMR spectrometer employing a 266 c/s magnetic field modulation and phase sensitive detection has been designed and built by the author to carry out these investigations. An electro magnet and an electronic current stabiliser to regulate the magnet current supply and to provide sweep of the current through the magnet have also been constructed.
