This thesis embodies the results of the investigations carried out by the author on the problem of resistanc-e to flow through open channels. Based on these> the author was able to modify Manning's formula, so as to yield the energy loss due to friction at the boundaries whether the flow is uniform, gradually varied or rapidly varied. The author has also formulated a new empirical equation for the equivalent value of the Manning's roughness coefficient in the case of channels having composite roughnessen_US
