    Abstract
It is concluded from this study that stuttering is influenced by two major factors: phonetic factors and factors associated with the encoding process of speech. The results also support Bloodstein's anticipatory struggle hypothesis. The difference between the monolingual and bilingual stutterers is mostly quantitative. The role of linguistic background in such a difference is not known, but it is possible that the high level of concept formation in bilinguals is responsible for such a difference. The difference in stuttering patterns between the two languages of a bilingual speaker is again quantitative. The only qualitative difference is that in Kannada there are more syllable repetitions than sound repetitions, and in English there are more sound repetitions than syllable repetitions.
