Slip rate minimization in digital telecommunication networks is now an area of considerable importance. As the slip rate depends directly on the network clock stability, a number of clock synchronization techniques have been developed, tested, and used to synchronize the widely distributed clock sources in practical networks. However, these techniques have many limitations. In this thesis, two new network clock synchronization techniques, viz., HMCS and WHMCS, have been introduced to circumvent some of the limitations of current techniques of clock synchronization, by combining the good features of two well-known techniques, viz., HMS and MCS. The characteristics of the new techniques and their performance have been examined through analytical, computer simulation, and experimental studies. From the results obtained, it is shown that these new techniques outperform the existing techniques in improving the network clock control and frequency stability, so that they can be gainfully used in minimizing the slip rate in modern digital telecommunication networks.
