dc.description.abstract | Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is an extension of conventional telecommunications
and the data trafics like text, facsimile, image. Efficient transmission of
voice/data on a common communication channel has attracted a lot of attention in the
area of digital communication.
To achieve integrated communication, many techniques have been proposed, studied
and applied in various fieltls, especially in multimedia communications. In this thesis, a
new technique of voice/data integration using movable boundary concept for optimum
channel utilization has been proposed. The performance evaluation of dynamic channel
allocation between voice and data trafic is carried out using analytical, simulation and
experimental methods.
An interface circuit has bcen developed to dynamically allocate slots between voice
and data. This is realized by generating the control signals based on the status of each
voice station. A Dynamic Slot Selector for allocating the slots between voice and data
has been implemented. A scheme is also proposed to allocate priority to voice over data
and to utilize the inactive voice slots by data trafic.
Simulation studies have been carried out based on the analytical methods and the
results are verified by the hardware experimentation for slot allotment between voice and
data trafic. The channel ulilization is measured for data and voice independently, and
together. Simulation work is also carried out to study the throughput by varying the
number of active voice stations. | en_US |
